How is statutory maternity pay calculated?

For the first 6 weeks, SMP is 90% of your average weekly earnings. For weeks 7-39, it is the lower of 90% of your average weekly earnings or £184.03 per week (2025/26 rate).

Can my employer pay more than statutory?

Yes — many employers offer enhanced maternity pay above the statutory minimum. Check your employment contract. Some offer full pay for a period before dropping to SMP.

Is maternity pay taxable?

Yes, statutory maternity pay is taxable and subject to National Insurance in the same way as normal wages.
