Student Loan FAQs
When do I start repaying my student loan?
You start repaying in the April after you graduate or leave your course, but only once your income is above the repayment threshold for your plan. Repayments are automatically deducted from your salary by your employer.
What happens if I never pay it off?
Your student loan is written off after a set number of years — 25 years for Plan 1, 30 years for Plan 2 and Plan 4, 40 years for Plan 5. Any remaining balance is cancelled and does not affect your credit score.
Should I overpay my student loan?
For most Plan 2 graduates, overpaying is not financially beneficial since the loan is likely to be written off before full repayment. However, if you are on track to repay in full, overpaying can save on interest. Use this calculator to check your situation.
